The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie by Muriel Spark

"It's only possible betray where loyalty is due."

A Scottish school-teacher chooses to live her life partially through a group of handpicked students. Years later, one of them ultimately 'betrayed' her by talking of her fascist leanings and thereby causing her to lose her job. Previous attempts by the headmistress to remove her by attacking her character had failed though the b teacher's sense of morality, too, left much to be desired. Amongst other things, she'd effectively pushed one of her students into have an affair with a married colleague with whom she was in love, and who seemed to be obsessed with her.
