A young girl was taken into care because her mother, an alcoholic who had herself had an unhappy life, was unable to adequately take care of her. Growing up, she developed a number of insecurities, and ultimately began to come into her own after she inherited a corner shop in a small village and moved there to set it up. Images of an idyllic, close-knit community often turned out to be illusory but, still, she also found friendship and family.
